Civil War map, Georgia and Tennessee, 1863.

The series consists of a Confederate field map hand-drawn in pencil and ink on tracing paper. Though undated, it was probably used by Alabama units during the Chickamauga campaign and subsequent engagements around Chattanooga in the Aug.-Nov. 1863 time frame. The map is drawn to a scale of approximately 1" = 2 statute miles, and is oriented north/south by Dalton, Ga. and the north end of Rocky Face Ridge; on the west by West Chickamauga Creek and the north end of Missionary Ridge; on the north by terrain features approximately six miles north of the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad from Cleveland, Tennessee, to Chattanooga; and on the east by the Western and Atlantic Railroad. It contains prominent terrain features, road and railroad networks, water drainage routes including the East and West Chickamauga creeks, fords and bridges, homesteads, stores, churches, and mills. Main features include towns of Dalton, Ringgold, and Graysville (Greyville), Georgia, Tunnel-Hill, and Chickamauga and Tyner's Stations. This map is probably part of those used by Brigadier General Henry D. Clayton during his operations in Tennessee and Georgia in 1863. Clayton commanded troops at Chickamauga, Rocky Face Mountain, and other campaigns in Tennessee. Although troop dispositions are not shown, the map provides details of the area where Generals Hardee and Forrest bivouaced prior to the Battle of Chickamauga in Sept. 1863. It also shows the approach routes used by Confederate forces, including those of Longstreet's reinforcements. Detail on the left side of the map shows interest in topographical information adjacent to the Chickamauga battle site. The tearing of the left side of the document indicates that it may have at one time been part of a larger map that included the Chickamauga battle area.
